I attended a beheading today,
They thought I was more than a spectacle;
They see my horror, thinking this a play,
My illusion was more than optical.
Faces in the crowd have all but sorrow,
This hood trapping my vision, all for naught;
These creaking planks, the stench of the gallow,
It's no wonder what some people have sought.
In the midst of sundown, hung upside down,
The hood falls, I send a prayer to the sky;
Then my hope rushes in, bearing a crown,
Clad in bravery, my only ally.
Yet the axe breaks flesh, making me limp meat.
The crowds applause, my saviour incomplete.
